NorthLuma blog · 2026-05-17 · 7-minute read · Industry: Hair Salons

Best hair salon & barbershop booking software 2026.

Hair-salon comparison articles miss the most important fact: Fresha is genuinely FREE for small salons. The subscription tools (Booksy / Vagaro / GlossGenius) charge $24-30/month for substantively the same job. We tested seven tools in May 2026 and laid out the math: NorthLuma + Fresha is the cheapest credible combo, but the subscription tools have legitimate reasons to exist for specific salon profiles.

TLDR

  • · Fresha (free) is the default for small EU/UK salons.
  • · NorthLuma $49 + Fresha free = cheapest combo with a real custom-domain branded site you own.
  • · GlossGenius $24/mo if all-in-one polish matters more than ownership.
  • · Vagaro $25/mo for multi-stylist salons needing payroll + memberships.
  • · Booksy $30/mo popular in US; stronger marketing tools.

Per-tool verdict

Fresha

Deposits / no-show: Native deposits + no-show fee automation

FREE for small salons (revenue model: 1.79% + 20¢ per online payment, free for in-salon payments). Most popular EU/UK salon platform. The default unless you have specific reasons to leave.

Booksy

Deposits / no-show: Native + automated review requests + waitlist

US-popular subscription alternative to Fresha. Stronger marketing tools; price tag larger.

Vagaro

Deposits / no-show: Native + membership/package sales + employee payroll

Most feature-complete subscription option. Best for multi-stylist salons that need payroll + memberships under one tool.

GlossGenius

Deposits / no-show: Native + branded mobile app + custom website

Best brand polish of the subscription tools. The included website is decent — fewer reasons to pair with an external builder.

Square Appointments

Deposits / no-show: Native (Square Subscriptions for recurring; Square POS for in-salon)

Tight integration with Square POS. Decent if you already use Square in the salon. Less salon-specific feature depth than Fresha/Booksy/Vagaro.

Wix Beauty template + Wix Bookings

Deposits / no-show: Wix Bookings (basic deposits, less salon-specific automation)

Cheapest hosted-builder + booking option. Lacks the salon-specific marketing flows of Fresha/Booksy/Vagaro.

NorthLuma + Fresha

Deposits / no-show: Fresha handles deposits + no-show + bookings; NorthLuma is the public marketing site

$49 once + Fresha free = $49 total + 1.79% per online payment. Cheapest credible salon-website + booking combo with real source-code ownership.

Frequently asked

Is Fresha really free?

Yes for the booking platform + calendar + client database + in-salon payments. The revenue model is 1.79% + 20¢ per ONLINE payment + 2.19% + 20¢ for new-client online payments. In-salon (card-present) payments through Fresha Pay are FREE. For most small salons whose mix is 70-80% repeat clients paying in-salon, the effective platform cost is single digits per month.

Why pair NorthLuma with Fresha instead of using Fresha's built-in website?

Two reasons. (1) Fresha's free website is a Fresha-subdomain page — limited design, Fresha branding, no source export. NorthLuma's $49 gives you a real branded site on your own domain with full source code you own. (2) SEO surface: a real custom-domain site at salonname.com pulls Google ranking that a fresha.com/your-salon page can't. The combo: $49 once for the marketing site + Fresha for booking is structurally better than either alone.

GlossGenius includes a website — why pay extra for NorthLuma?

GlossGenius's included website is genuinely better-designed than Fresha's, so the gap is smaller — at $24/mo, GlossGenius is reasonable all-in-one. NorthLuma + Fresha beats GlossGenius on cost ($49 once + Fresha-fee vs $24/mo × 60mo = $1,440 over 5 years). NorthLuma + Fresha beats GlossGenius on ownership (you own the site code; if GlossGenius changes terms, your site goes dark). NorthLuma's design ceiling sits below GlossGenius's. Choice depends on which trade-off matters.

Stylist-specific booking — does NorthLuma support it?

Not natively — Fresha/Booksy/Vagaro/GlossGenius all handle the 'pick your stylist' flow because they ARE the booking platform. NorthLuma's site embeds the booking platform's widget; the stylist-selection happens inside the embedded widget. The user experience is essentially identical to using the booking platform's own website.

5-year cost spread?

Fresha (free + ~1.79% on ~30% of payments online): typically $200-600 total cost over 5 years for small salons. Booksy: $1,800. Vagaro: $1,500. GlossGenius: $1,440. Square Appointments: $1,740 + payment fees. Wix Beauty: $1,620. NorthLuma + Fresha: $49 + Fresha fees (~$200-600). Across the board, fitness/salon platforms cluster $1,400-1,800 over 5 years; NorthLuma + Fresha shaves $1,000+ off because the website host is one-time.

Bias note: NorthLuma is in the table; we're also pointing you at Fresha (which is genuinely free for small salons). Pricing verified May 2026. Email [email protected] for corrections.
