NorthLuma blog · 2026-05-17 · 7-minute read · Industry: Retail Boutiques
Best ecommerce platform for retail boutiques 2026 — when Shopify + when not.
Retail-boutique articles all default to Shopify because Shopify is genuinely the right answer for most real stores. We tested seven tools in May 2026 and laid out the narrow but real case where NorthLuma + Shopify Starter ($5/mo, not the $32/mo most articles cite) wins on cost for boutiques under 30 SKUs.
TLDR
- · Standard boutique (30+ SKUs): Shopify Basic $32/mo. The default. Don't over-think it.
- · Already on Square POS: Square Online $12/mo for tight integration.
- · Complex variants (apparel sizes): Lightspeed eCom $89/mo.
- · Brochure-with-cart, under 30 SKUs: NorthLuma + Shopify Starter $5/mo combo — cheapest legit option.

Per-tool verdict
Shopify Basic
Inventory depth: Unlimited products + variants + locations + multi-channel
Industry default. Best inventory + POS + multi-channel. Trade-off: $32/mo + 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction + ~$30/yr theme + apps.
Square Online
Inventory depth: Unlimited; tightest Square POS sync
Cheapest hosted with real inventory. Right answer if you ALREADY use Square POS in the boutique.
BigCommerce
Inventory depth: Unlimited + B2B + headless
Shopify alternative; no transaction fees from the platform (you still pay your processor). Better for stores planning B2B + headless.
Wix Stores
Inventory depth: Unlimited on Business+ plan; limited on lower
Fine for stores under 100 SKUs. POS via Wix Retail ($25/mo extra). Outgrown at scale.
Squarespace Commerce
Inventory depth: Unlimited on Commerce Basic+
Best-looking stores. POS via Squarespace POS app. Smaller plugin ecosystem than Shopify.
Lightspeed eCom
Inventory depth: Unlimited + retail-specific (sizes, colours, parent-child products, kits)
Premium retail-specific. Right answer for boutiques with complex variants (apparel + size runs + colour combinations) at scale.
NorthLuma + Shopify Buy Button
Inventory depth: Up to ~30 SKUs comfortably; Buy Button is a JS embed showing one or many products from Shopify's Starter plan
$49 once + Shopify Starter $5/mo (Buy Button + Stripe payments + 1 staff). Cheapest credible boutique combo. Shopify holds the inventory; NorthLuma holds the public marketing site (you own the code). Right for boutiques with < 30 SKUs that don't need in-store POS.
Frequently asked
Which is best for a 30-SKU boutique with both online + in-store?
Square Online $12/mo if you want one bill for online + Square POS in-store. Shopify Basic $32/mo if you want maximum platform depth + the largest app ecosystem. NorthLuma + Shopify Starter $49 once + $5/mo if you want the public marketing site as code you own + Shopify handling the cart + inventory backend. The Shopify Starter route at $5/mo is genuinely cheap; the trade-off is you don't get the full Shopify storefront design polish — just Buy Buttons embedded on your NorthLuma site.
What's Shopify Starter ($5/mo) and why doesn't every comparison article mention it?
Shopify Starter is a hidden gem: $5/mo, includes Buy Buttons (HTML/JS snippets to embed in any external website), Shopify Payments at standard rates, 1 staff account, full Shopify inventory + order management on the back end. It's marketed for 'sell on social', but it works perfectly for the brochure-with-Buy-Button pattern. Most articles miss it because the affiliate kickbacks point at Basic Shopify ($32/mo). NorthLuma + Shopify Starter is the cheapest legit combo for boutiques under 30 SKUs.
When should I NOT use NorthLuma for retail?
Boutiques with 50+ SKUs needing real product-filter UX + variants + collection navigation; stores doing in-store POS that need real-time inventory sync (you need Square Online or Shopify with POS hardware); stores with marketing funnels that depend on collection pages + customer accounts + abandoned-cart recovery (Shopify-Plus territory). For any of those, Shopify Basic is the right answer; we're not.
Inventory sync between NorthLuma site and Shopify?
The Buy Button on your NorthLuma site pulls live data from Shopify (price, in-stock status, variants). When inventory hits zero in Shopify, the Buy Button auto-disables. So the inventory data is real-time even though the surrounding marketing copy is static HTML you control. You update product images / descriptions in Shopify admin; the Buy Button on your site reflects it within minutes.
5-year cost?
Shopify Basic: $1,920 + transaction fees. Square Online: $720 + payment fees. BigCommerce: $1,740. Wix Stores: $1,620. Squarespace Commerce: $1,560. Lightspeed eCom: $5,340. NorthLuma + Shopify Starter: $49 + $300 ($5/mo × 60) = $349 + transaction fees. Cheapest boutique-with-real-cart combo by a wide margin.
Bias note: NorthLuma is in the table. Pricing verified May 2026. The Shopify Starter $5/mo tier is real (shopify.com/starter); it's under-promoted in most comparison articles but is the right answer for the brochure-with-cart pattern. Email [email protected] for corrections.
